BFA Printmaking Thesis
(2020-2022)
My work explores personal experiences and ideas connected to the dysfunction of political discourse, morality, propaganda, tradition, nostalgia, and cynicism. Using locations from my hometown and personal experiences as sources for imagery, I create autobiographical surreal worlds that allow for the development of personal narratives that speak to an alternate political and social system. These troubled worlds, built from personal objects and childhood photographs, reference a distraught home life and depicts how a structured hierarchy within a household can be molded through power dynamics that lead to the establishment of both physical and unspoken conflict.
Using dolls, animals, the landscape, metaphor, and symbolism, I empower myself to share, accept and bury personal experiences and create spaces that build upon familiar constructs associated with political, personal, and domesticated systems. While I do not intend for the viewer to understand everything within these intensely personal worlds, I do intend for the viewer to understand and acknowledge its dysfunction, and to consider their place with in it, questioning their own struggle for control and normalcy. By addressing these issues, it is my hope that the viewer will find independence as well as begin to develop a more positive outlook on the future of personal discourse.
